Prunjehil - Observation point

Prunjehil is a hidden viewpoint for nature lovers in the south of Schouwen-Duiveland. This former landfill now offers panoramic views over the bird-rich nature reserve De Prunje, the impressive Plan Tureluur, and the vast Eastern Scheldt.
What can you expect at the Prunjehil viewpoints?
- Three viewpoints: Prunjehil offers not one, but three scenic lookouts.
- Viewpoint 1 – Orientation square overlooking the Eastern Scheldt: Located in the southwest corner of the hill, this meeting and orientation spot offers wide views of the Eastern Scheldt, and on clear days you can even see Noord-Beveland. A peaceful stop with sweeping Zeeland landscapes.
- Viewpoint 2 – Spiral-shaped tower with information point: Reach this standout spot via a spiralling path that leads to a sheltered picnic and info area. Continue inside to a raised platform for great views of the Prunje region, plus information on its flora, fauna, and history.
- Viewpoint 3 – Panoramic spot and birdwatching location: A favourite among birdwatchers, this viewpoint overlooks the heart of De Prunje. Bring your binoculars or telescope – the area is full of waders, ducks, geese, and meadow birds.
About De Prunje and Plan Tureluur
- Natura 2000 site: De Prunje is part of the Eastern Scheldt protected area under Plan Tureluur. The land was redesigned into a wetland, resembling its state before the 1953 flood disaster.
- Bird paradise: Thanks to the saline, wet, and open environment, it’s a vital breeding and feeding ground for avocets, spoonbills, redshanks, and winter flocks of brent geese and wigeons.
- Colourful flora: In spring and summer, the fields turn red, purple and yellow with samphire, sea asters, ragwort, and buttercups. Regional cattle graze in summer to help preserve the biodiversity.
- Limited access for conservation: Walking through De Prunje is not allowed to protect the birds. But Prunjehil offers perfect views over the reserve.
- Excursions: Guided tours take place in July, August and September. In winter, walks around the area are organised with a guide. See Staatsbosbeheer or Natuurmonumenten for details.
