Observation tower De Zuidkaap - Observation point

On the southern coast of Schouwen-Duiveland lies one of the most remarkable nature reserves of Zeeland: Plan Tureluur. One of the best ways to experience this landscape is from the observation tower De Zuidkaap.
What can you expect at the observation tower De Zuidkaap?
- Breathtaking views: De Zuidkaap rises high above the landscape in the middle of Plan Tureluur. From the top you can look out over winding creeks, marshy wetlands, and wide open scenery.
- Accessible adventure: The tower can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. The route takes you along an unpaved path and a wooden bridge over the creek – a peaceful walk with chances of special encounters.
- Birdwatching: In this bird-rich area you may spot black-tailed godwits, spoonbills, avocets, and of course the characteristic redshank. Don’t forget your binoculars!
- Sheep on the dike: While walking or cycling along the dikes you might come across a flock of free-roaming sheep. A charming and typically Zeeland photo moment!
- Purple glasswort in autumn: In September the landscape transforms into a magical scene as glasswort turns reddish-purple. This salt-loving plant creates a stunning colour contrast with the blue of sky and water.
Plan Tureluur
This vast area full of marshes, creeks, and channels is a true paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
- Unique nature restoration project: Plan Tureluur was launched in 1991 as a large-scale nature development project. Former farmland was returned to nature, with the fertile topsoil removed and new creeks and water features created.
- Part of National Park Oosterschelde: The reserve is part of the Natura 2000 area and National Park Oosterschelde, where nature conservation and biodiversity are central.
