Viewing tower Schelpenhoek - Observation point

A visit to the Schelpenhoek viewing tower is a wonderful experience for those who love nature, history, and impressive panoramic views.
What can you expect at the Schelpenhoek viewing tower?
- Beautiful viewpoint: The Schelpenhoek tower stands on top of a historic caisson, a concrete structure used to close breaches in the dikes after the 1953 Flood Disaster. From here you have sweeping views over the Eastern Scheldt and the creek area.
- Historical information panels: Around the tower you’ll find panels telling the story of the disaster and the reconstruction. You’ll learn that the area was once home to a small community that disappeared overnight under the water.
- Views as far as the Plompe Tower: On clear days you can even see the iconic Plompe Tower in the distance – another striking reminder of Zeeland’s past.
The Schelphoek creek area
- Walking in the De Schelphoek nature reserve: Around the creek lies a varied nature area, created after the 1953 disaster. Follow the 4 km waymarked trail (red posts) starting at the car park on Stolpweg. Ideal also for families with children.
- Birdwatching in nature: Over 60 bird species live in the woods and along the water. From woodpeckers and nightingales to the colourful kingfisher and the little grebe. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
- Peace, space and reflection: The area offers not only nature and education but also a place to reflect on the power of water and the resilience of Zeeland.
