Veerse Meer - Nature

The Veerse Meer is a brackish lake between Walcheren and Noord-Beveland. It was created when the Zandkreek dam (1960) and the Veerse Gat dam (1961) were closed, the first Delta Works in Zeeland.
What can you expect at the Veerse Meer?
- Islands: The lake has 17 islands. Twelve are open to the public and five are bird sanctuaries. Around 40,000 migrating waterbirds rest on Haringvreter island every year.
- Water sports: The lake is ideal for sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding. There are public slipways, long jetties and swimming jetties, and large marinas such as Delta Marina in Kortgene.
- Water quality: Since 2004 the Katse Heule sluice has let in water from the Oosterschelde. This improves water quality and gives the lake a small tide again.
Practical information
- Surroundings: Veere, Kamperland, Vrouwenpolder, Kortgene and Wolphaartsdijk all lie on the lake.
